Literary consultant/fiction
writer, Cat Kurtz...
As a literary consultant, I work with writers
at any stage—from brainstorming, to re-organizing text, to line editing. I assist with process as much as product. Every writer has an individualized
way of creating. Together we’ll establish how you write, what your goals
are, and how we can best work to complete your project. Sometimes I play the
role of instructor and editor rolled into one. Sometimes I play the role of
book doctor. It all depends on what you want, how you work and where you are
in the project.
My editing is informed by the fact that I too am a writer with my own
rituals, strengths, struggles, and my own amazing pair of editors who shape
both my process and understanding of writing. I love my job because each new
writer re-frames my way of seeing and offers me the challenge of
crystallizing and maximizing that view. And so the diversity of literary
voices grows.
I have taught writing and worked as a writing consultant at the University
of Colorado in Boulder for ten years. In addition, I work as a freelance
editor, writing tutor, and founder/senior editor of sub-scribe online
magazine. I earned my undergraduate degree in literature from the University
of California Santa Barbara and my Masters degree in fiction from CU,
Boulder. Currently, I am writing a non-fiction account of the spiritual and
women’s revolution begun by Buddhist nuns fighting for the right to ordain
in South East Asia.
